History

The Soho Mint was created in 1788 by Matthew Boulton. The company produced domestic coins for Great Britain, as well as coins for Britain's colonies. It produced the Seringapatam Medal for the East India Company in 1801-02 and a medal for the Battle of Trafalgar. Matthew Boulton produced the medal for the Battle of Trafalgar at his own expense and it was awarded to everyone present at the battle. In 1809, Matthew Boulton died and the Mint fell under the direction of his son, Matthew Robinson Boulton. In 1841, Matthew Robinson Boulton's son, Matthew Piers Watt Boulton, took over the company until it closed in 1850. The equipment used in the Soho Mint was bought by Ralph Heaton II of the Birmingham Mint.
