Henry Birks and Company was established on March 1, 1879 on Saint James Street in Montreal as a retail jeweler. In 1893, he went into partnership with his three sons, William, John and Gerald, and the company name changed to Henry Birks and Sons. As the commercial and retail district in Montreal shifted north, Birks moved the location to a new building on Phillips Square in 1894. In 1897 Henry Birks and Sons bought out Hendery & Leslie, who had been their largest supplier of silverware, and instead began producing their own. Shortly after, in 1901, Birks expanded the company nationwide, opening stores in large cities such as Winnipeg and Ottawa. In Winnipeg, Birks took over D. R. Dingwall Limited under the name Birks-Dingwall.
His eldest son, William, became head of the company the same year. Birks produced Canadian military badges, pins and medals during World War I and World War II. In 1905, Birks began a partnership with P.W. Ellis & Co. and Ryrie Bros Ltd. in Toronto under the name Birks Ellis Ryrie and Birks-Ryrie. In 1928, Birks bought out P.W. Ellis & Co. In 1951, British Columbia presented Princess Elizabeth with a diamond, emerald and platinum bracelet in which she told the Secretary of British Columbia, “I have never received a more beautiful gift”. Birks is still active in the present day and is referred to as the Tiffany’s of Canada.
