Physical Description

A circular medal constructed of bronze or silver gilt. The obverse bears the bust of King Georg V, encompassed by the inscription "GEORG V V. G. KOENIG V. HANNOVER", below the neck of the bust is the engraver mark "JAUNER". The reverse bears the inscription "LANGENSALZA 17. JUNI 1866" encompassed by a wreath of laurel tied with a ribbon in a bow at the bottom.

History

The Langensalza Medal was instituted in 1866 by King Georg V. The medal was conferred upon veterans of the Hanoverian army who participated in the Battle of Langensalza on June 27, 1866.

The battle was fought between the kingdoms of Hannover and Prussia, and although the Hanoverian forces won the battle, they were surrounded by the larger Prussian force and ultimately forced to surrender. Following the battle, the Kingdom of Hannover was annexed by the Kingdom of Prussia and eventually became part of the unified German nation state.

The Langensalza Medal is the last award that was instituted in the Kingdom of Hannover. The stamp of the medal was produced by the medalist Jauner, Vienna.
