Physical Description
A circular medal constructed of bronze or bronze gilt. The obverse bears a Leopold cross with the crowned cipher of Ernst August, and below the cipher is the date 1813. The reverse bears the date 1813 within a laurel wreath. On a loop for suspension with a yellow and white ribbon.
History
The Commemorative War Merit Medal, 1813 was instituted by King Ernst August of Hannover on May 11, 1841. It was established to reward the men who voluntarily entered the army and fought to protect Hannover's liberty from Napoleon. The medal could be awarded to both citizens and foreigners who volunteered with the Hannoverian army. The medal was non-returnable.
