Physical Description
A circular medal constructed of bronze. The obverse bears a crowned "W" encompassed by a wreath of laurel. The reverse bears the inscription "SCHLESWIG HOLSTEIN 1848-1849" with a star above the inscription. On a loop for suspension on a blue and yellow striped ribbon.
History
The Schleswig-Holstein Commemorative Campaign Medal was founded in June 17, 1891 by Prince Albert of Prussia, who was acting as Regent of Brunswick. The medal was conferred upon the men of Brunswick who participated in the Schleswig-Holstein campaign from 1848 to 1849. Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers, doctors, civil servants and Enlisted Men were eligible to receive the award. Individuals had to apply for the medals. The medal was designed by Carl Peterson, Braunschweig.
