The Badge was instituted by NSFK Korpsführer General der Flieger Friedrich Christiansen on July 12, 1938, and was conferred upon NSFK pilots upon receiving their powered aircraft license.

The badge was remodeled for a second time in 1943. The design retained the metal pinback form, but replaced the airplane seen in Models I and II with an eagle in flight.
