History
In 1938, the SS introduced a field-grey visor cap to match the new field-grey uniform. Following the outbreak of the Second World War, the field-grey uniform became more popular than the standard black uniform.
The Field-Grey Visor Cap has a high-peaked front and a saddle-like shape.
The Officer grade cap features a visor that is manufactured out of vulcanised fibre, and an aluminium cord chin strap is placed directly above it. The cap has a black velvet band above the visor to which a skull pin is attached. The interior is generally lined with silk or rayon and features a celluloid diamond with a maker's name or logo on the top. The General Officer visor cap features silver piping along the crown and on the top and bottom edges of the cap band. The Officer cap features white piping along the crown, as well as along the top and bottom edges of the black velvet cap band. As Officer’s were required to purchase their own uniforms, the quality and features of the cap will vary.
The Non-Commissioned Officer and Enlisted Men (NCO/EM) cap features white piping along the crown, as well as along the top and bottom edges of the black cloth cap band. The visor is made of vulcanised fibre, and a patent leather chin strap with two side buckles and a split centre is secured directly above it. The interior is generally lined with a silk-cotton fabric and features a large celluloid diamond with a maker's name or logo. A leather sweatband is attached to the interior forehead area.
