History
The headgear, uniforms, and insignia worn by members of the Kriegsmarine were based upon the designs utilized by the Kaiserliche Marine and the Reichsmarine. The official regulations governing the uniforms of the Reichsmarine were issued on April 5, 1921, and they were embraced, with a few alterations, as the Kriegsmarine uniforms in 1935. New guidelines concerning rank insignia were issued in 1936.
In 1941/42, some members of the Kriegsmarine who served alongside the Army units in North Africa, primarily the Afrikakorps and the Armor Group Africa, wore an organisation-specific Afrikakorps cuff title.
It is navy blue with the golden-yellow letters "Afrika", with a palm tree on each side. Some cuff titles have a golden-yellow top and bottom border.
A variant exists with thin top and bottom borders, without palm trees, and with the letters "Afrikakorps".
This cuff title was worn on the lower left sleeve of the reefer jacket and brown tropical field blouse.
There is very little information about this cuff title, and it is possible that it was worn unofficially. It remains very rare.
This cuff title was discontinued with the introduction of the Wehrmacht 'Afrika' cuff title in January of 1943.
