History
The Medal of the Order of the British Empire was instituted in June 1917 and is associated with the Order of the British Empire. The Silver Medal was presented to both civil and military personnel in recognition of meritorious service or acts of gallantry. The Medal was replaced by the British Empire Medal and the Empire Gallantry Medal in 1922. Until its discontinuation, it is estimated that approximately 2000 Medals were awarded.
The civil and military versions of this medal are differentiated only by the ribbon. The civil version is worn on a purple ribbon while the military version is worn on a purple ribbon with a central red stripe.
Privately altered versions of the Medal may be encountered.
