History

The South Africa Police Good Service Medal was instituted to members of the South African Police in recognition of 18 years of exemplary service. Gallant or distinguished service also merited the award of the Silver Medal. The Medal was replaced by the South African Medal for Faithful Service.

A clasp with the inscription "MERIT-VERDIENSTE" was awarded to denote gallant or distinguished service recognized by the Medal.

The Medal features bilingual inscriptions on both the obverse and reverse. There are 3 versions of the Medal which differ by inscriptions. The first version features both English and Dutch inscriptions on the obverse and reverse, while the second and third versions feature English and Afrikaans inscriptions. The second version is inscribed "POLIESIE DIENS" on the obverse and "VIR GETROUE DIENS" on the reverse. The third version is inscribed "POLISIEDIENS" and "VIR TROUE DIENS."

Privately altered versions of the Medal may be encountered.
