History
The Royal Air Force Meritorious Service Medal was instituted by King George V in June 1918. The Silver Medal is awarded to members of the Royal Air Force, who are of an equivalent rank of sergeant or higher, in recognition of valuable meritorious service in the field not involving flight. The Medal was superseded by the British Empire Medal in 1928, but reinstituted in December 1977.
The Royal Air Force Meritorious Service Medal has an annual contingent of 60 members.
There are 2 versions of the Medal which differ by the obverse effigy of the reigning monarch at the time of issue.
