History

The Royal Air Force Long Service and Good Conduct Medal was instituted by King George V on July 1, 1919. The Silver Medal is awarded to Non-Commissioned Officers and other ranks of the Royal Air Force in recognition of long and efficient service. The Medal was initially awarded for 18 years of service, but the qualifying period was reduced to 15 years of service in 1977. Between 1919 and 1945, aircrew who serviced less than 18 years were eligible if they displayed highly exemplary conduct against enemies, acts of gallantry, or other special services in times of emergency. Since 1944, prior service in the Navy or Army is also qualifying and in 1947, Officers became eligible for 12 years of service in the ranks.

A silver clasp superimposed with an eagle surmounted by a crown was awarded to denote additional years of service (18 years of service until 1977 and 15 years of service thereafter).

There are multiple versions of the Medal which vary by the obverse effigy of the reigning monarch at the time of issue.

There may be additional versions which vary by composition.
