History
The Northern Ireland Prison Service Medal was instituted by Queen Elizabeth II by Royal Warrant on February 25, 2002. The Silver Medal was created to recognize distinguished and brave service provided by Northern Ireland Prison Service personnel who faced difficult and dangerous situations. The Medal rewards 5 years continuous or aggregate service since January 1, 1971. Service cut short as a result of death or illness incurred during duty is still qualifying.
Medals awarded to civilian staff feature a green ribbon with navy and sky blue stripes while Medals awarded to prison officers feature a green ribbon with navy and sky blue stripes with an additional narrow red stripe down the centre.
