History

The Northern Ireland Home Service Medal was instituted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1992 as a replacement for the Ulster Defence Regiment Medal. The Silver Medal is awarded to part-time Officers and men of the Ulster Defence Regiment and the Royal Irish Regiment in recognition of 12 years of efficient service provided since July 1, 1980. The next of kin of eligible deceased members of either regiment may also apply for the award.

A clasp is awarded to denote an additional 6 years of service.
