History

The New Zealand Long and Efficient Service Medal was instituted on January 1, 1887. The Silver Medal was awarded to Non-Commissioned Officers and men of the Volunteer and permanent Militia Forces of New Zealand in recognition of 16 years of continuous, or 20 years of non-continuous, service. The Medal was made obsolete in 1931 following the introduction of the Long Service and Good Conduct (Military) Medal with the clasp for New Zealand. Approximately 2384 Medals were awarded before this date.

There may be additional versions which vary by manufacturer and composition.
