History
Established by King Charles III Joahn, this medal was initially conferred upon individuals to recognize accomplishments in Conciliation Boards, but when amended in 1844, many more recipients were eligible to receive the award. After the April 13, 1844 amendment, the medal was conferred not only to recognize accomplishments in Conciliation Boards, but also to recognize civil merit rendered to the Kingdom of Norway. When the Medal was amended one more time on May 1, 1920, the individuals who have rendered meritorious volunteer services, or other charitable and philanthropic services, were eligible to receive the award.
When established, the Medal was only conferred in silver. It was not until the April 13, 1844 amendment that the Medal was divided into two grades, I Class (in gold) and II Class (in silver).
The rim of the medal is engraved with the recipients name.
There are two known versions of this medal. From 1819-1907 the obverse design featured the Royal portrait and name of King Charles III Johan. From February 1907 the obverse design was changed to the Royal portrait and name to King Haakon VII.
There may be a version of this medal that was manufactured near 1819, that did not have a Royal crown surmounting the medal. There may be other versions of this Medal, including differences in suspension.
This Medal may also be known as the Medal for Bogerdad.
This Medal was discontinued in 2004.
