History

The Utrecht Medal was established by the city of Utrecht in 1850. It was awarded to all survivors of the Volunteer Rifle Company of Utrecht Students and the Volunteer Mounted Rifle Company who defended the city of Utrecht against French occupation in 1815. It became permitted for wear on military uniforms on September 21, 1851.

There are two different versions of the Silver Medal that vary in inscription. The first version was awarded to members of the Volunteer Rifle Company of Utrecht Students and features an obverse inscription that translates to "Volunteer Rifle Company of Utrecht Students." The second version was awarded to members of the Volunteer Mounted Rifle Company and features an obverse inscription that translates to "Volunteer Mounted Rifle Company No.5." Both versions feature a reverse inscription that translates to "Campaign."

The medals were issued non-wearable, but were rendered wearable by Royal Decree on September 21, 1851.

A total of 40 Silver Medals were awarded to members of the Volunteer Rifle Company of Utrecht Students, and 42 Silver Medals were awarded to members of the Volunteer Mounted Rifle Company.
