History
Two types of women were employed by the SS: the regular type were women who served (either with a full-time contract or temporarily) as what was known as a Kriegshelferin (female war auxiliary).
However, some women were trained at an SS school located in Oberenheim, Alsace. These were known as SS-Helferinnen (female SS auxiliaries).
These women were between 17 and 30 years of age. They were trained and then employed as telephonists, teleprinter operators, and radio operators. Some were even promoted to Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) or Officer rank.
They wore an insignia on the left breast pocket which is made of a black cloth oval with the SS runes in either aluminum wire or silver-grey thread embroidery, as well as aluminum twist cord piping.
