History
The 23rd ‘Kama’ Division was raised in June of 1944 around a cadre of the 13th Waffen Mountain Division of the SS ‘Handschar’. The division never reached full strength and never saw combat as a unit. The Bosnian Muslim members of this division mutinied on October 17, 1944, and the formation was shortly thereafter dissolved.
Foreign SS volunteers were not permitted to wear SS runes and instead, they were issued collar tabs that were unique to their division. The division’s collar tab features a sun with 16 rays, which was the symbol of Alexander the Great.
The collar tab was never issued.
Members of the division who had previously served with the 13th ‘Handschar’ continued to wear the scimitar collar tab of that unit.
