History
The Camouflaged Field Cap was first introduced in May of 1942 and was designed without side flaps and buttons. The cap was issued in various colours of camouflage and some were reversible for different seasons and terrain.
The first model of the cap was in the same pattern as the M43 and did not feature any insignia. In December of 1942, Himmler ordered the caps to be produced with insignia. Caps that had been previously produced without insignia were to be used until they were worn out. Some soldiers elected to add insignia to caps produced without.
Shortly after it was decided that caps could be worn with insignia, authorization to do so was suspended.
The second model of the cap features a seam down the front of the cap and is reversible.
Camouflage caps with the "Lateral Plane Tree" pattern were authorised to feature skull and eagle insignia that were a vibrant green colour.
