Physical Description
A smooth circular medal with a pearled edge, constructed of silver. The obverse features the inscription ‘VERDIENST IM KRIEGE’ (‘for merit in war’), surrounded by a laurel wreath that is tied by a ribbon at the bottom. The reverse features the crowned, mirrored, and intertwined monogram ‘G’ with the date ‘1870’ underneath. On a loop for suspension, on a yellow ribbon with a blue centre stripe and blue side stripes.
History
The Honour Medal for War Merit was instituted on October 21, 1870 by Prince Georg. The medal was conferred upon non-commissioned officers and enlisted ranks who served during the Franco-Prussian War.
The medal was awarded to 146 recipients.
