History
The Civil Merit Medal was originally instituted by Grand Duke Friedrich Franz in 1798, and was conferred in recognition of meritorious service rendered to the Grand Duke and the state.
The Type VI medal was instituted in 1897 by Friedrich Franz IV as a continuation of the awards founded by his predecessors. The medals feature his portrait on the obverse.
The award was primarily conferred upon low-ranking military personnel and civilians.
