History
The Civil Merit Medal was established by Princess Pauline of Lippe, who acted as the regent of Prince Paul Alexander Leopold, and was conferred upon individuals who rendered meritorious service to the state and the community.
The decoration was often conferred as a reward for individuals who rendered long and faithful service. In addition, it was also awarded to individuals who had saved the life of another human being.
Awards were primarily conferred upon citizens of Lippe.
As of 1869, the medal had lost much of its social significance and was no longer a prized award. In 1901, a further 100 medals were produced. The decoration was discontinued in 1918.
