Physical Description
A smooth circular medal with a raised border, constructed of silver. The obverse features the right-facing bust of Prince-Elector Wilhelm II. Below is the manufacturer’s signature ‘K’ for Wilhelm Körner jr. The circular inscription reads ‘WILHELM II. KURF. SOUV. LANDGR. V. HESSEN GR. H. V. FULDA’ (Wilhelm II. Kurfürst Souveräner Landgraf von Hessen Großherzog von Fulda = Wilhelm II Prince-Elector Sovereign Landgrave of Hesse Grand Duke of Fulda). The reverse features a wreath of laurel, tied at the bottom by a ribbon, with the inscription ‘DEM VERDIENST’ in the centre (‘for merit). On a loop for suspension, on a red ribbon with broad white borders.
History
The Military Merit Medal was instituted by Elector Wilhelm I and was conferred upon non-commissioned officers and soldiers who rendered long and faithful military service.
Following the institution of the Military Merit Cross in 1832, the Military Merit Medal was no longer awarded.
