Physical Description

A smooth circular medal with a raised border, constructed of bronze. The obverse features a crown in the top half with a dot on each side, and the monogram ‘ELE’ in the lower half. The reverse features a narrow laurel wreath, tied by a ribbon at the bottom and closed at the top, with the inscription ‘FÜR KRIEGSFÜR-SORGE’ (for war welfare) in the centre. On a loop for suspension, on a red ribbon with narrow white side stripes.

History

The Honour Decoration for War Welfare was instituted by Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig and was conferred upon individuals who rendered exemplary care of sick and wounded soldiers.

The medal was originally conferred upon Officers, Non-Commissioned Officer, soldiers, and medical personnel for non-combat related military merit.

As of June 26, 1916, the medal was only conferred upon women who were not eligible to receive the Cross for Medical Workers, and instead men received the War Honour Medal.

This Medal was the predecessor of the War Honour Decoration.
