Physical Description

A circular medal constructed of gold. The obverse bears the bust of Prince Elector Maximilian IV Joseph, encompassed by the inscription "MAXIMILIAN JOSEPH CHURFÜRST ZU PFALZ BAIERN". Stamped under the bust "LOSCH F." for Joseph Losch, Munich. The reverse bears the inscription "DEM VERDIENST UM FÜRST UND VATERLAND" (for merit to duke and fatherland) encompassed by a wreath of laurel and oak. On a loop for suspension.

History

The Civil Merit Merit, Type II was established on November 2, 1805 by Prince Elector Maximilian IV Joseph. The medal was awarded to civilians who had distinguished themselves in the 1805 war against Austria. On January 1, 1806, the elector accepted the title of King (Max Joseph I). The Type II medals were melted down in favour of the new coinage, and therefore are rare.
