History
The Medal for Members of the Royal Household and Members of the Households of the Royal Family was first established by Royal Decree on July 21, 1889. Each successive monarch established their own award by Royal Decree, but for the sake of clarity and continuity, they are treated here as a single decoration.
The Medal is awarded to attendants of foreign heads of state on official state visits, both in Belgium and abroad. It could also be awarded under special circumstances to members of the Belgian Armed Forces for exceptional service to the King or other members of the Royal Family. It is classified into types according to the ruling monarch depicted on the obverse.
The Type II Gold Medal has an obverse inscription that translates to "Albert, King of the Belgians."
