History
The Commemorative Medal for the Africa Campaign was awarded to Belgian military personnel in recognition of service in Africa from 1914 to 1918 when Belgian troops engaged German troops in combat near German East Africa and the eastern borders of the Belgian Congo.
Recipients who served in the 1917 campaign resulting in the capture of Mahenge, Tanzania, were awarded a "MAHENGE" clasp.
There are two versions of the Silver Medal that differ in reverse inscription. The first version has “1914-1916” and the second version has “1914-1917.” The reverse inscription of both versions translates to “Cameroon, Ouesso, Assobam, Mouloundou, Yaondé, German East Africa, Kigali, Nyansa, Udjiji, Bujumbura, Biharamulo, Kitega, St. Michael, Tabora.”
