History
The Medal of Pedro and Maria was established in commemoration of the campaigns that were waged from 1826-1834 during the Portuguese Civil War. It was awarded in military and civil divisions in order to reflect the type of service that was rendered by the recipient.
The Bronze Medal (Military Division) has a reverse inscription that translates to "Campaigns of Liberty," and the Bronze Medal (Civil Division) has a reverse inscription that translates to "Civil Service." In addition, there are multiple versions of each division because the service term (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9 years) is inscribed on the reverse.
