The Order was founded by Bartholomew, Bishop of Vincenza, in order to settle discord between the Guelphs and the Ghibellines. The secondary purpose of the Order was to provided support and defence for the Catholic Religion.

The Order has also been known as the Order of the Brothers of the Jubilation, the Order of St. Mary of the Tower, the and Order of the Chevaliers of the Mother of God.
