History
The Italian Government founded by this Medal to recognize the exceptional service rendered by individuals and institutions following the earthquake in southern Italy on December 28, 1908.
Initially, the Medal was only awarded to Italian recipients, but on July 25, 1909, a Royal Decree was passed that allowed it to be conferred upon foreign individuals and groups who had provided exceptional aid and service in the relief efforts in Italy.
There are two main versions of the Medal, medals awarded to institutions and medals awarded to individuals.
The medals awarded to institutions and groups measure 40mm in width.
The medals awarded to individuals measure 35mm in width, and they may have the engraved mark "L.GIORGI," and "S.J.," or not have any marks at all.
The silver and bronze medals awarded to individuals may have the obverse inscription "VITTORIO EMANUELE III" or "VITTORIO EMANUELE III RE D'ITALIA."
