This Medal was founded by a Royal Decree from Victor Emmanuel III. It was conferred upon individuals who had rendered exceptional services within the Kingdom of Italy aimed at the promotion and advancement of national education and culture. The Medal was suppressed by the Medal of Merit for National Education in 1936.
