History
This Medal is associated with the Air Force Long Service Medal, ITA297, which was instituted in 1926 during the Kingdom of Italy.
The Medal is conferred to recognize a minimum of 10 years of aeronautic navigational service within the Italian military.
There are two main versions of this Medal.
From 1954-2010 the design of the Medal is identical to the medals awarded during the Kingdom of Italy, with the only difference being the obverse inscription changes to “REPUBBLICA ITALIANA,” but the reverse inscription remains "MEDAGLIA MILITARE AERONAVTICA ."
From March 10, 2010 onward, an entirely new design of the Medal was enacted. The obverse inscription changes to "LUNGA NAVIGAZIONE AEREA," and the reverse inscription is now "REPVBBLICA ITALIANA."
The ribbon may be decorated with a gold, silver, or bronze eagle, depending on the grade of the medal.
