History
The Order of Merit was originally established by president Leonid Kuchma in 1996 and it was first awarded on October 12th the same year.
It is granted to an individual for outstanding achievements in science, economics, culture, politics and military service, or it may be awarded posthumously.
The II Class and III Class awards are conferred in two division, the Civil Division and the Military Division.
The Civil Division awards are worn on a plain ribbon, while the Military Division awards are worn on a ribbon featuring a crossed swords pin.
Individuals who receive the award are granted the title “Chevalier of the Order of Merit”.
