History

The Medal of Sport Merit was awarded to Romanian citizens in recognition of achievements in sport, but it was permanently discontinued following the collapse of the Socialist Republic in 1989.

The I Class Medal features initials on the obverse that stand for "Republica Socialistă România" (Socialist Republic of Romania) and a reverse inscription that translates to "Sport Merit."
