History

The Military Order of Saint George was established by King Carol II in early 1940 as a replacement for the Bene Merenti Order of the Ruling House. It was meant to be conferred upon Romanian military personnel in recognition of meritorious wartime service, but it was never officially awarded. Examples that can be found today were manufactured before the exile of King Carol II in September 1940.

The original name of the order is "Ordin "Sfantul Georghe"".

The I Class Cross has a pinback and an obverse inscription that translates to “God is my Strength.”
