History

The Independence Cross was awarded in recognition of participation in the struggle for Polish independence before, during, and immediately following the First World War. It is the precursor to the Order of the Cross of Independence.

It was awarded to Polish civilians and military personnel, and could also be awarded posthumously. Recipients were entitled to reduced fares on rail travel, priority for public school choice for their children, and the right to be elected to the Senate.

The Bronze Medal features an obverse inscription that translates to “To Combatants of Independence," and reverse initials that stand for "Rzeczpospolita Polska" (Republic of Poland).

There may be additional versions of the Bronze Medal that differ in size or composition.
