History

The Independence Cross was awarded in recognition of participation in the struggle for Polish independence before, during, and immediately following the First World War. It is the precursor to the Order of the Cross of Independence.

It was awarded to Polish civilians and military personnel, and could also be awarded posthumously. Recipients were entitled to reduced fares on rail travel, priority for public school choice for their children, and the right to be elected to the Senate.

The Cross (with swords) was awarded to those who participated in the armed struggle for Polish independence prior to the outbreak of the First World War. The obverse inscription translates to “To Combatants of Independence.”

There may be additional versions of the Cross (with swords) that differ in size or composition.
