History
The Commemorative Medal of the War of 1940-1941 was established on March 2, 1946. It was awarded to personnel of the Hellenic Army who served in Epirus, Albania, Macedonia, Thrace, or Crete during the Greco-Italian War of 1940-1941 and to personnel of the Royal Hellenic Navy who served in the Aegean Sea, the Ionian Sea, or the Adriatic Sea during the same period.
There are four versions of the medal that differ in design and inscription. The first two versions were awarded from 1946-1983 and feature the portrait of King George II on the obverse. The medal for army personnel awarded during this period features a reverse inscription that translates to "1940-41 Epirus, Albania, Macedonia, Thrace, Crete," and the naval counterpart of the same period has a reverse inscription that translates to "1940-41 Aegean, Ionian, Myrtoum, Adriatic." The medals awarded after 1983 feature the figure of Nike on the obverse with an inscription that translates to "Greece." The medal for army personnel features a reverse inscription that translates to "Albania, Epirus, Macedonia, Thrace, Crete," and the medal for naval personnel features the same reverse inscription as the first navy version.
