Georgia
Georgia is a country in the Caucasus region of Eurasia, covers a territory of 26,911 square miles, and its population is about 3.718 million. It is bounded by the Black Sea, Russia, Turkey, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. The capital and largest city is Tbilisi. Georgia’s official languages are Georgian and Abkhazian.
After the 13th century, the kingdom declined and eventually disintegrated under hegemony of various regional powers. In 1810, Russia conquered the western Kingdom and the remaining territories absorbed in the 19th century. Georgia became an independent republic before the Red Army invasion in 1921. It was a founding republic of the Soviet Union and in 1936, Georgia emerged as a Union Republic. In April 1991, a pro-independence movement led to the secession from the Soviet Union. For most of the following decade, Georgia suffered from civil conflicts, secessionist wars. Following the bloodless Rose Revolution in 2003, Georgia strongly pursued a pro-Western foreign policy.
The Order of the National Hero of Georgia was established in 2004. It is the highest state decoration of Georgia and exclusively granted for heroism.
