History
The Order of the Eagle Cross was established by the Estonian Defence League in 1928 in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of Estonian independence. In 1936, it was adopted by the Estonian Parliament in the Decoration Act, which recognised it as a national award. It was later suppressed during the Soviet occupation, but it was renewed in 1995 following the restoration of Estonian independence.
It is conferred upon Estonian citizens and foreigners in recognition of meritorious military service and other services rendered to national defence. It is awarded with swords, in all grades, when conferred upon military personnel. It may also be awarded posthumously.
The III Class Cross is identical to the II Class Cross, however only the II Class Cross is worn with a Breast Star. The reverse inscription translates to "For the Homeland."
