History
This Order was founded in commemoration of the establishment of the People's Republic of Bulgaria. It was awarded only once to reward foreign citizens and Bulgarians for rendering service in Bulgaria's revolutionary efforts, and in the battle against capitalism and fascism.
The awards could be conferred posthumously.
The original design of the Order was crafted by Boris Angelushev. The awards were produced by Strahil Miloshev until the late 1940s, and later by the State Mint in Sofia.
There are two main versions of the awards.
The awards issued first feature a screwback.
The awards issued second are worn on a ribbon.
The Order was discontinued in 1991.
The obverse inscription translates to "For National Freedom 1941-1944."
There are many variation in the design of the medal, including four part construction, five part construction, and different styles of portrait on the obverse medallion.
