This medal was conferred upon civilian within the Ministry of Defence and military members of the Bulgarian People’s Army in recognition of gallantry during battle, or for promoting the security and defence of the Republic.

The medal was designed by Raycho Peev, and it was discontinued in 1991.

The obverse inscription translates to “For Services to the National Army".
