History

This medal was conferred upon foreign and national citizens and groups for contributing to the development of Sofia, and for developing strong ties of friendship with the People's Republic of Bulgaria.

The medal was originally only meant to be awarded at the celebration of Sofia's 100th anniversary, but the regulations were amended on September 17, 1982 to allow for the medal to be awarded periodically.

The medals awarded after 1982 feature a change in the reverse inscription.

It was discontinued in 1991.
