Sri Lanka


The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka is an island country in the Indian Ocean, in South Asia. It is situated at the southern tip of India. The capital is Colombo, and the population is over 21 million people. The official languages are Sinhala and Tamil. The major religion is Buddhism, but there are also large percentages of Christians, Muslims, and Hindus.

The Sri Lankan flag is one of the oldest flags in the world, boasting a variety of colours and a golden lion. The sword the lion is holding was added in 1948 when they achieved independence.

The history of Sri Lanka is very diverse. In 1505, the Portuguese arrived on the island nation of Sri Lanka. After the Portuguese, Sri Lanka became a British Crown Colony called the island Ceilao. They gained their independence from the British in 1948 when it was named the Dominion of Ceylon and then became the Republic of Sri Lanka in 1972.

Sri Lanka is the oldest democracy in Asia. The military from Sri Lanka consists of the Sri Lanka Army, the Sri Lanka Navy, and the Sri Lanka Air Force, which all fall under the control of the Ministry of Defence and is known as Sri Lanka Armed Forces.

The highest award is the title Sri Lankabhimanya. This medal is conferred by the President of Sri Lanka upon Sri Lankan citizens for extraordinary and meritorious service to the nation.
