History

On September 19, 2003 this medal was renamed the "Presidential Medal of Merit".

It is conferred upon Philippine citizens and foreigners in recognition of:

1) exceptional service to the president, administration or cabinet members;
2) creating international recognition and national pride in the areas of the arts and sciences;
3) a retired individual who has significantly promoted Filipino culture, following service to the government;
4) meritorious service that increases the prestige of the Philippines.
