History

The Gold Medal of Special Membership was established on April 1, 1956 following the award's initial institution in 1888. It is awarded to individuals, businesses and organizations who have made a monetary contribution of over ¥ 10,000 to the Japanese Red Cross.

A women's medal is awarded on a bow ribbon, and a men's medal is awarded on a ribbon.

The reverse Japanese characters translate to "Meiji 21st Year / Japan Red Cross Society".
