History
The Order of Azad Hind was instituted by Subhas Chandra Bose in 1942. The Order is conferred in 5 Classes, plus a Grand Star, to Indian volunteers fighting with the Germans during the Second World War. The Order was later extended to reward members of the Indian National Army (INA) for service in the South-East Asia Campaign. German personnel may also be eligible for the award. The Order is no longer in existence.
The Tiger of India (Sher-e-Hind) is presented as the highest military decoration of the Azad Hind government.
The Grand Star is worn from a neck ribbon.
There are 2 versions of the Grand Star. Stars awarded in recognition of acts of combat valour feature a design of swords, while non-combatant service is denoted by the award of a Star which does not feature swords.
