History

The Soldier's Medal was established by Act of Congress on July 2, 1926. The Medal was created to reward soldiers for acts of bravery during peacetime that does not merit a Silver Star but which is still above the call of duty. It is awarded to any member of the Armed Forces of the United States or of a friendly foreign nation who has distinguished themselves by an act of voluntary heroism outside of enemy conflict which involves the risk of personal life and is not required by the performance of regular duty. The Medal is the highest honour a soldier can receive in recognition of valour outside of combat. It has been estimated that approximately 18, 520 Medals have been issued.

An oak leaf emblem is worn on the ribbon to denote additional awards.

Recipients of the Medal who are enlisted American service members are eligible to receive a 10 percent increase in retirement pay if the Medal was awarded in recognition of a level of valour which is equivalent to the level which would merit a Distinguished Service Cross.
