History
The Army Distinguished Service Medal was established by Presidental Order on January 2, 1918, and approved by Congress on July 9, 1918. The Bronze Medal may be awarded to any person, serving in any capacity, with the United States Army who provides exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service to the government whilst in a position of great responsibility. For service during peacetime, the term of duty is narrowed and evidence of a conspicuous significant achievement is required. Persons who are not members of the Armed Forces may also be eligible for the award for exceptional service during wartime only and with approvement from the President.
